Ross Barney

A founding partner of Tumu Studio, Ross is a graduate of the Pratt Institute and licensed architect in Illinois & Tennessee. He has been practicing architecture professionally for over 20 years. Over the course of his career, he has worked on projects both regionally and internationally. High-rise, mass transit, hospitality, religious centers, schools, office buildings, civic spaces, and master planning are some of the many project types that Ross has had experience with throughout his time practicing architecture. He has served as project architect on many award-winning projects and led teams large and small through all phases of work.

Ross oversees the design and execution of work at Tumu.  His meticulous attention to detail is an essential ingredient in the studio’s ability to produce high quality outcomes for all of our projects. Ross also has a strong passion for environmental conservation and believes that environmentally sustainable architecture is essential to the future of our planet. He uses his skill and knowledge of sustainable practice to ensure that the projects we design are good for people and the environment.

In addition to his work as a practicing architect, Ross has played a role in the academic side of the field since 2007.  He has served as an Adjunct Professor at the IIT School of Architecture and is a Faculty Lecturer at University of Colorado Boulder where he teaches architectural design. His studio was recognized by AIA Chicago in the 2012 Design Excellence Awards, receiving a SustainABILITY Leadership Award for their work. Ross has given several lectures across the country on his research into the adaptive reuse of urban waterfronts as well as the constantly changing state of our built environment.
